Principal's Message

Greetings!

It has been two months since the start of school, and the beginning of this year has been especially busy. As a staff, we have already completed two major school evaluations: both internal (CISVA) and external (Ministry of Education). The findings of these reports affirmed what I see in our halls and classrooms every day; St. Mary’s School is a warm, welcoming faith community where students are cared for deeply, and excellent instruction takes place. I am so proud of our staff who work so hard every day to make this school special. We are unquestionably blessed to have our children in the care of such educators! It also helps that we have such receptive and respectful children coming to our school each day, ready to learn, so thank you for that.

Some highlights for the month of November-
The Annual General Meeting starts off our month on the 1st at 7 p.m. in the church annex - please come if possible! Mrs. Choboter and some of the Grade 7 class are generously offering childminding during the hour-long PEC presentation. Grades 4 & 7 are finishing up their week-long FSA tests on the 2nd. We have our Remembrance Day ceremony on the 8th at 11 a.m. in the church, led by our Grade 3 class. This leads into our first long weekend of the month, and Oktoberfest is in there, coming up on Saturday the 10th. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, you better do it soon, because they’re going fast! Personally, I cannot wait for this event, and it will be unlike any other event we’ve had at our school with S-Bahn playing crowd-pleasing favourites that ought to get everyone on the dance floor. ‘High-Touch High-Tech’ are coming in to deliver their ever-popular hands on Science instruction for Grade 4, 6, & 7 on the 16th, and the Friday following this, November 23rd, there is a Pro-D Day.

Thank you for all that you do to make this school community so vibrant, alive and joyful. It is clear that the spirit of the Lord is alive in us!

Yes, Yahweh did great deeds for us, and we were overjoyed.   - Psalm 126:3

T. Slivinski, Principal

HALLOWEEN CANDY

We ask that you be especially careful of the candy/treats brought to school (NO NUTS).

THANK YOU for your co-operation!

Children often receive an abundance of candy at Halloween.  For the past few years, we have invited students to donate some of their candy to AGAPE.

The Agape Street Ministry reaches out to women in downtown Chilliwack;; volunteers provide the ladies with candy bags, each with a simple message to “Tell them He loves them…”  We have volunteers from St. Mary’s Parish who are involved in this ministry and all candy donated will be given to them to bring to the AGAPE office.

Candy donations will be collected at the school November 1st-5th

A heartfelt THANK YOU for your generosity to our October Food Drive.

We will hold another food drive in December to help fill our Christmas hampers.

STUDENT ABSENCES

Please remember to phone the school before 9 a.m. to report your child’s absence.  We have a voice mail system for off-hours.  Absences may also be reported via email: psymes@saintmarysschool.ca, through the School App or through the School website.
If you elect to send in a note, rather than an email, the note must be sent in the DAY your child returns to school.  State the DATE and the REASON for the absence. Our attendance and absentee notes are AUDITED each year, to determine the grant we receive from the government.  Please be clear as to the reason for absence e.g. sick, holidays etc.

The colder weather will be  upon us soon!

Students will go outside to play at recess unless there is a downpour.  Please ensure that your child comes to school with a jacket to protect from the drizzle.  Students do not wear boots inside.  Please ensure your child has “indoor” shoes on those ‘gum boot/snow boot’ days.  Send mittens and snow pants in the snow so the children can enjoy that weather too.

With winter just around the corner, we remind you to listen to the local radio station (98.3 FM) for notice of school closures.  Closures will also be posted on the school website by 7 a.m., Facebook pages,  and via the school App.

CHRISTMAS SHOP
DECEMBER 14TH

Our 7th annual  “Christmas Shop” for St. Mary’s School students will be held on Friday, December 14th.

Our “Christmas Shop” is  very popular with the students.  The “shop” is stocked with items donated by our school families and the children are given an opportunity to go “shopping” for gifts for their parents/grandparents.  All items will be sold for $1.00.  Parent volunteers provide free gift wrapping for the children.

We’d like to start collecting items now!  All donations should be “gently used” and in good condition (no big items please!).  Your donation could be just about anything—CDs, tools, picture frames, jewelry, books, ornaments etc.  The children have a great time choosing that  “special gift” for mom/dad/grandpa/grandma.
Please start sending  items into the school.

DONATIONS OF GIFT BAGS GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED.
WE ALSO NEED MANY VOLUNTEERS TO HELP “WRAP” PRESENTS
