Curriculum

In addition to the yearly theme in Religion, students study Bible stories, the seasons of Advent and Lent, sacred objects and spaces in the church, Mary as a role-model for Catholics, ways to apply scripture to daily life, signs, symbols and holy objects which are associated with Christian prayer, and the sacrament of Baptism.

Language Arts (oral language, reading and writing) is the main academic focus in Grade One. Students participate in a variety of activities to increase their understanding of stories, the elements of stories, vocabulary to talk about texts, decoding and comprehension strategies, how to create stories, etc. They also study oral language strategies, basic phonics, spelling patterns, punctuation and printing skills.

Math topics include: patterns, addition and subtraction skills to 20, concrete graphs, skip counting (by multiples of 1, 2, 5,10), number concepts to 20, comparing 2-D and 3-D shapes and objects, measurement and financial literacy.

Science concepts include: features and behaviours of living things, seasonal patterns and changes, properties of matter, sources and properties of light and sound, Aboriginal perspectives of the seasons and local plants and animals.

The Social Studies themes include: rights and responsibilities, natural and human-built features of the environment, diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives within the local and other communities, the local Aboriginal communities, how the environment shapes how we live and how we shape the environment.

Students participate in inquiry based learning and put the Core Competencies into practice. They are encouraged to be examples of their faith to those around them. Grade 7 Camp, Spirit Day, a field water study, an Egyptian dig, and the water slides are just some of the wonderful opportunities to look forward to!

In grade 1 we will take field trips to:

  • The Chilliwack Cultural Centre

  • Safety Village

  • The Chilliwack Spray Park

  • The Chilliwack Gymnastics Club.
