PEC Meeting Minutes: May 2018

Minutes May 22, 2018

Opening prayer

REPORTS

Rhonda motions that any names of students or specific teachers be taken out of the minutes.  ALL IN FAVOR

4.1 Treasurer
No financials to compare year to date.  Currently working on preliminary budget and numbers are similar to last year’s.  Budgeted for another 6 month contract for communications position.

Conclusions
Melissa motions to hire a category 6 Learning Assistance teacher for a 0.8 FTE short term contract.  We will offset salary and benefits using internally restricted funds not exceeding $100,000.  ALL IN FAVOR

4.2  Pastor
New PEC members coming.  38 students received Confirmation and 34 students received their First Communion.   

4.3 PRINCIPALS

4.4 TEACHERS
No teacher available. 

4.5 FUNDRAISING
Walkathon – Would like to see walk-a-thon shirts brought back next year.  107 Tickets sold for 70th Anniversary Celebration.  June 20th PFG will be meeting with Parish to book gym.  

4.6 MAINTENANCE
Chris Veenstra forwarded specs for basketball hoops to Ado and Thomas.  Needs clarification for the smaller side hoop specs.  

Conclusions
Lets move forward with the main basketball hoops

Action items- Let Chris Veenstra know that we would like the 2 main basketball hoops installed over the summer

It has been difficult to get clarity on what maintenance items we could get the volunteers to help with.

OLD BUSINESS

5.1 STRATEGIC PLAN
Tabled until June

5.2 ENRICHMENT
Ideas:  Picnic Table building kits for tables around the school grounds. 
           November – military boot camp (Remembrance Day)
           October – cake decorating for Carnival Night
           Cultural Day – Learning a Dance, paper Mache projects (pinatas)
            Science Fair. 
           “Sorting Ceremony” at a Welcome Back Assembly for “House Teams” Kids get together               and make a team flag. 
             Flash Mob for party in the Park. 

More Outreach:  Emergency Services Appreciation. 

5.3 GEEK SQUAD
Working on quote and have not gotten back to Thomas.

5.4 CLASS PHONE
Pacific Communications coming on Thursday to give classrooms handsets.  The lines will be ale to go to the office as well as outside calls. 

5.5 CLEANERS
New cleaning contract to start July 1st. 

5.6 LIFESKILLS

  • Parents Day (Career Day) – Bring your parents to school and see the different opportunities to earn a living. 
  • Uniformed Person to talk to children about respectfulness, etiquette and manners.
  • Babysitting/Home Alone course/Basic First Aid/Know Phone number and address
  • Self Defense for Kids
  • Host a WE DAY Conference for the kids

5.7 FUNDRAISING ITEM
Add Bleachers to the fundraising wish list.

NEW BUSINESS

6.1 NEW PEC
Dale Wagner, Angela Groves, Jenna Winterhoff, Mark Filiatrault have applied to be part of the PEC.

6.2 SCHOOL APP
We will keep the “Club/Classroom” feature on the school app. 

Conclusions
Have Katy promote these features to the school community with hopes that teachers and parents will use them more. Melissa will work behind the scenes of the App and Website.

6.3 PARKING LOT FUNDRAISER
Rhonda looked into getting insurance for the parking lot fundraisers and we are covered under the Knights of Columbus. 

6.4 FIELD TRIPS
Fieldtrip incident brings forth discussions on protocols for children safety and accountability. 

6.5 ONLINE PAYMENTS
Looking into 2 different companies.  MunchaLunch or KEV Group.  MunchaLunch is $300 a year, first 3 months FREE.  Can be used for Hot Lunch,Fundraisers ect.  KEV Group have not gotten back to us Yet. 

Conclusions -All in favor to use MunchaLunch but would still like to know numbers from KEV Group. 

 

PRINCIPALS REPORT

Current Enrolment 204 Students

Our music teacher is back for the remainder of the year, but we will be looking to fill that roll next year.  We do have someone interested on a sub-contract basis.

Next year’s theme for the school year is “What do you want of me, Lord?”

June 8th Pro-D Day – Sandra Reis from CISVA will give a short in-service for teachers which will aid the teachers in their curriculum planning work on June 11th. 

Students were happy with their dance instruction from Project Dance.  They will have one more class next Tuesday.

Grade 6/7s go to Vancouver this Thursday for their Vancouver Odyssey trip.  Leave early a.m. and return Friday afternoon.  Safety plan in place:  Small groups and same sex chaperones wherever possible.  

Walkathon went well and we had great weather.  We raised $16,000.

Lots of interest in our school from the community and families reaching out for registration packages. 

Katy Sgouraditis was hired for the Communication and Development position.  Her start date is in August.
